Hickman Claims Emotional Win in Cabin Fever 40

Just days after losing his father to cancer, a mourning Riley Hickman piloted his #R1 BIF Motorsports/Hickman Manufacturing Company/CVR/Phantom Racing Engine Super Late Model to an emotional victory at Boyd's Speedway (Ringgold, Georgia) on Saturday afternoon. (BinghamFreelance.com Photo)
Hickman, the 2012 Southern Regional Racing Series champion, overtook racelong leader Tom Maddox amid lapped traffic on the 18th lap of the annual Cabin Fever 40 and went on to earn $3,000 for his fourth career series victory.

Maddox started from the pole of the 40-lap feature and broke out to the early lead, while Hickman made an early charge from his eighth starting spot to fifth before the race was slowed by a caution on the second lap. Following the caution, Hickman continued to work his way to the front, moving to third on the eighth lap, taking second not long after and eventually slipping past Maddox in traffic. Despite a pair of late-race cautions Hickman motored away from the pack to score the victory over Jeff Smith, Tom Maddox, Rick Hixson, and Caleb Ashby..

In victory lane an emotional Hickman commented, "This win really helped us put a finish to a tough week. Dad wouldn't have wanted it any other way, and this win is definitely for him. I also can't thank all of my friends, who have been nothing short of amazing over the past week as they've shown so much support for my family and I during such a tough time." He concluded by noting, "A big thanks goes to Junior at Phantom Race Engines for lending us an engine to run for the weekend. If he doesn't do that, then there is no way we are even here today, much less in victory lane."
